X - Inc. All Day (painted metal sign)

ca. 1950-60s double-sided metal sign, 10.25 x 16.75 inches. An extensively worn sign that has crossed over to folk art territory. Originally advertising rates, the front side has 2/3 of a 1.00 charge intact; the back has "$  [Tax] Inc. All Day." Three original drilled holes, one at the top center and two at the edge. The sign has had at least two iterations of use, and the backside, which is only about half intact, shows an abandoned attempt in red. Both sides have been shellacked to preserve the present state; the front is in stable condition, but the back has some varied textures and bubbling that make it more susceptible to further deterioration. The metal itself is bent and uneven, creating a topography of chipping that's interesting as both visual and tactile texture.
