The Werner Primer for Beginners in Reading

First Edition. Chicago: The Werner Company, 1895.

Cloth backed pictorial boards, 8vo, 112pp. About Very Good: exterior with rubbing wear, corners bumped to round. A few dried leaves tucked between pages will leaf illustrations. A scarce but visually compelling primer aligned with Friedrich Froebel's educational philosophies. Introduction by Gerard Stanley Hall and dedicated to actress and suffragette Alice Chapin. From Taylor's preface:

THE WERNER PRIMER is a growth. It is based upon the kindergarten idea as taught by Froebel. According to his teachings, lessons in form and color should precede lessons in general science. The rainbow colors in flowers and fruits, and the sphere, cube and cylinder among type forms, furnish the most simple basis of classification for observation work. These simple and clear ideas are especially suitable for the subject matter of the first reading lessons. Studies of plant and animal life follow naturally and these are closely related to the literature which is presented in story, song and fable.

Again, the lessons put into practice the kindergarten doctrine that the hand helps the brain in acquiring knowledge. A variety of occupations are provided, many of which will aid the child in learning to read and write.
