The Ladies' Lexicon and Parlour Companion...
Containing nearly every word in the English language, and exhibiting the plurals of nouns and the participles of verbs; being also particularly adapted to the use of academies and schools.
Early reprint, first published in 1829. 12mo; 407, iv pp. 4 pages of ads for other school books published by Grigg. Binding in poor condition, both boards and final gathering detached, spine covering with a large chip but still attached to the front board. Nibbling to the title page, dampstaining and discoloration throughout volume. Page 283 is mis-paginated, but the contents are collated complete.
Grimshaw claims the inclusion of plural forms (taken from Lindley Murray) makes this dictionary superior, as well as the selection of words-- "Unless accompanied by a particular caution, no word has been admitted, which is not now of polite or popular use; and no word has been excluded, which is required in either epistolary composition or in conversation." Lots of zoology, no impolite anatomy.
