Studio portrait of an artificially wide-eyed man (Victorian Post-Mortem photograph)

6.5 x 4.25 inches. Late nineteenth-century, somewhat haphazard postmortem photograph with rough-cut edges and crudely inked-in pupils; his attire appears like it may be a superficial formal dickey laid on top of the body. There is a slight halo of toning that suggests it was housed in a paper mat for some time, but the lack of traditional mounting suggests this would have been a difficult expense for the person who commissioned the photo—a reminder of how important these photos could be to the surviving loved ones who may not have had a photo to remember the deceased by otherwise. Legendary eyebrows.
