Shepp's World's Fair Photographed (canvassing book)
Oblong quarto showcasing three binding styles: full leather front cover, half leather rear cover, and full cloth cover and spine inside. Typical rubbing and cracking to leather, chip at the front joint and half-inch loss at the spine ends, else Very Good. Subscriber leaves excised, occasional short closed tears at the bottom edge of the pages. Describes 5 binding styles, including a "SPECIAL EDITION Sealskin Leather, padded sides..." for $10.
One of the more deluxe photographic tours of the Chicago World’s Fair made for curious, and usually distant, admirers. Likely an early issue of the sales dummy, the last page touts the success of Shepp’s Photographs of the World (“1,000,000 copies have been sold!) The scope of the fair, and the potential points of interest of potential subscribers, makes the content chosen for sample book particularly interesting: grand views of the architecture, manufacturing marvels, and "exotic" cultures from around the world--ultimately presented as an American triumph. The preface closes,"No one congregated in Jackson Park could fail to cry, 'Great is America and the glory thereof."
