Set of 26 illustrated ABC cards "Child Health Alphabet"

New York: Child Health Organization of America, ca. 1920.

Set of 26 cards printed in orange and black, 4 x 6 inches. In Good to Very Good condition: the cards are a bit grubby with fingersoil and age toning. "A" has more prominent staining and "M" has a bit of nibbling at the edge; all have a few pinholes from being tacked to a classroom wall (as intended) but are without major tearing or damage. Each card has printed at the bottom: "Child Health Organization of America, Penn Terminal Building, 370 Seventh Avenue, New York." The images were published as a book in 1918 distributed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and again by Macmillan in 1925. No illustrator is credited, but the rear cover of the book is signed Halpert. No copies of the cards published by Child Health Organization of America are listed in OCLC. The organization was led by Dr. Luther Emmett Holt (1855-1924), an author and pediatrician best known for publishing 'The Care and Feeding of Children.' The organization promoted hygiene, health and nutrition initiatives essential to a child's ability to learn, like eating lunch and getting rest. The verses are also reflective of WWI-related concerns of food supply ("D is for Dates, the kind that You eat, Deliciously sweet and far cheaper than Meat") and tying health to patriotism ("P is for Prunes, Potatoes and Peas, and Patriots who will be glad to eat these." "Understanding the best way to live, United for Service our Country to give.")
