...embracing new discoveries, new illustrations, several important changes in the nomenclature of the organs, re-grouping of the organs, re-construction of the temperaments. Printed wraps, 12mo, 108 (1)pp. Edition identified by preface. Fair copy with knocked-in corners and heavy chipping the spine with inconspicuous Japanese tissue reinforcement. Simultaneously published by Fowler's outfits in London and New York, the last page of text in this copy is stamped "Printed in the U.S.A."
Title page and chart completed in manuscript by Taylor at Morecambe, dated July 31, 1901, for Florence Mavis Snowden, though the ruled pages intended for "Remarks" (101-108) remain blank.
Publishing at the turn of the century, Taylor endeavored to distance himself from the heavily criticized phrenological premises without repelling its followers. "This Edition has been thoroughly revised, and special alterations and additions have been made, in order to meet the pressing needs of our times... I have a profound respect and admiration for the memory of Drs. Gall and Spurzheim, Geo. Combe, and the Fowlers, from whose works I learned the first principles of Phrenology; but I am not blind to the defects in any of their books. On the other hand, I have endeavoured to do my best to retain and stand by all that is accurate."
