Reading and Readers (Home College Series No. 69)

First Edition. New York: Phillips & Hunt, 1883.

Printed wraps, 12mo, 16pp. Fair with heavy wear to pp.5-6 resulting in a 1/4" hole toward the top. Modest creasing and soil but otherwise clean. The series, edited by J. H. Vincent, was associated with the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, and produced morally-angled tracts on a wide range of topics. This installment emphasizes the need for rigorous reading standards and ties moral decay to dime novels in much the same way modern critics villainize video games ("Jesse Pomeroy, the 'Boston child-murderer'... read at least ten different Dime novels... Some thoughtful minds trace the larger proportion of the tramp nuisance to the free reading of vile stories." 1 copy in OCLC.
