Slate Pictures in Six Parts: Drawing School for Beginners, Books 1 & 2
Softcover 16mo (6.5 x 4.25 inches), 16 pages each, comprised entirely of contour drawings printed in negative to replicate the appearance of a black chalkboard tablet. The first two volumes in a series of 6 booklets designed for teaching drawing by copying the lines of the shapes, though some of the subjects get rather complicated quite quickly (Book 1 goes from grids to wild animals in just a few pages). Both books generally very good with rubbing and wear, old paper tape remnants to spines. Book 1 is split an inch at the bottom of the spine and has a few instances of tracing and embellishing, but to minimal impact. Despite evidence of use, sturdy copies of this rare early Prang & Co. production, published the year before Louis Prang returned to Europe to hone the chromolithographic process that would make him famous.
