Notebook on textile weaving with original examples

France: Made by hand, ca. 1940s.

A charming bit of student work composed primarily of hand-woven textile samples with explanatory text regarding the use and characteristics of each variation. 14 leaves bound by a navy cord. 8.75 x 6.25. Woven specimens are presented next to a colored chart showing the pattern. 5 pages of manuscript text, 21 pages with textile samples and patterns neatly inset between panels glued around the edges, creating a window effect. Many of the specimens appear opposite matching pattern drafts describing the structure. The notebook focuses on fabrics including twill, cotton and satin; damask patterns including chevrons, dots, and houndstooth. Several additional small draft patterns are clipped to the last page. The work is attractive and tidy, but also full of small imperfections (often related to weft tension) that remind us of their human maker. A nice combination of visual and tactile textures.
