New Letters and Lettering

First Edition. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1943.

First edition thus, revised from the 1938 Letters and Lettering. Designed by Paul Carlyle and Guy Oring, with forward by Herbert Richland. Small oblong 4to with enclosed wire comb binding. 159pp. Near Fine with minor age toning and rubbing; previous owner's signature to pastedown, else unmarked. A particularly nice copy of the increasingly hard-to-find lettering book produced at the cusp of the mid-20th century design aesthetic, with a focus on the streamlining of traditional script alphabets, building expressive geometric and sans-serif form, and the exploration of lettering as illustration. Incredibly modern in style and with ever-enigmatic text specimens.
