My Wife or My Place; A petite comedy, in two acts.

Baltimore: Jos. Robinson, 1831.

Stab-stitched 16mo; 46, (2) pp. First American edition, lacking numeral "3" in p.31 pagination; bottom corner 37-42 torn, just grazing the outermost letters. A comedy of marriage and domestic life that debuted in London at the Haymarket Theatre August 20, 1831. 6 copies in OCLC. Reviewed in the London Examiner: "...it is the best farce that has been produced at this theatre for some time; but it is one of which a courtly censor would never have permitted the representation; indeed, three years ago there would have been some risk of the author being prosecuted for a seditious libel, and no doubt that the Chief Justice would have held the submission of the manuscript to the authorities of the Lord Chamberlain's office a malicious publication. My Wife or My Place, conveys its fable in its title; hundreds of all ranks have had an opportunity of considering the question; and though many have endeavoured to blink the alternative, and to persuade themselves that their own merit, and not my lady's beauty, was the cause of their promotion, a sufficient number of noble and right honourable persons have submitted to the compromise, to make the hits of the farce exceedingly piquant; and the self-denial of its hero almost meritorious." (8/28/1831, p.6)
