[student work, manuscripts]
John Grubb’s “Arithmetic in Whole Numbers,” 1811 ciphering book with a section for “Ale and Beer Measure;” exercises for calculations related to cloth, land, time, wives (or their dowries), &c.
John Grubb’s book, 1811. English student ciphering book bound in quarter leather with marbled wastepaper, heavily rubbed with the old text peeking through. 152 pages. Good with heavy chipping to rear joint, evidence of excised page at the front after one printed page of multiplication tables and measures. With Grubb family genealogical notes to the endpapers added at a later date: John was born in 1800 and married Mary Bellamy in 1833. Their children were Sarah and William and Ann and John Junior and Alice and Elizabeth—all recorded here, too.
