Coulter, Ottley R.

Fun in Body Building

New York: Knickerbocker Publishing Company, 1945.

Printed wraps, 4to, 95pp. Very Good with light rubbing and age toning. A budding bodybuilder has recorded their early training schedule on the title page and made their own chart of exercises on two pieces of paper, tracing the illustrations from the book—immensely charming, and a nod to the utility of fold-out charts offered in Bob Hoffman's books (from the same collection).

Coulter went from being a vaudeville performer to fitness guru to self-defense expert. The copious and heavily caricatured diagrams are highly evocative and apply to both men and women--though women are only pictured in the swimming chapter. A bit of intimate health is included in the chapter, "Sex and Your Body." An uncommon book with superb handmade charts and evidence of the young man who referenced it. Irresistible for the drawings alone! Only 1 holding in OCLC (Stark Center for Physical Culture).
