Aesthetic Movement Eastlake Ebonized Picture Frames
Late Victorian Eastlake picture frames, ca. 1880s. 14 x 8.5 inches overall. Picture window measures 7.5 x 5.5 inches from the back. Removable arched curtain mat with 5.5 x 4 window opening. Wooden frames coated with gesso and then faux-ebonized with black paint. The design is incised into the frame, revealing areas of gilt in the underlayer. Evident surface restoration with touched-up cracks and chips and a topcoat of varnish, plus some later gold accents on the shiny black finish. With old glass and card backings, and eye hooks for hanging.
An unusual pair with a naive quality of secondary linework that lends a folk art quality. Less refined than most Eastlake examples, evidently produced by a less experienced artisan, or even an amateur emulating the style. Uncommon, highly collectible, and ideal to have as a pair.
