Plain paper boards and paper covered spine cracking along the front joint and abraded at the spine ends and sewing with slight losses, boards uncommonly bright, contents with mild foxing and age toning; Very Good. Richard Rands 1818 ink signature to ffep and title page, else clean and unmarked. American Imprints 43122.

A treatise with particular attention to discipline and families undertaking private education, covering infancy to formal schooling. Published pre-common school era, "the following pages are adapted especially to those families, which move in the higher circles of life; but they contain much, that may be interesting and useful to those in humble stations" (v). Addresses the parent's role in discipline and modeling behavior; is against both corporal punishment and, interestingly, "emulation," which he argues promotes good performance executed for the sake of others' attention, rather than a sense of principle which can guide children independently.
