A Dark Stranger

New York: New Directions, [1950].

First American edition of Strachan's English translation. No date stated (1950). Green cloth hardcover 8vo, 187pp. Very Good with mild sunning to cloth, small speckles at the bottom corner of the boards and textblock (as from a rogue coffee splatter), only visible on the outside. Contents gently age toned; clean and unmarked. In a Very Good dust jacket with rubbing soil and very shallow chipping/loss at the spine ends (small stitch of tape at the back of the top) and corners of the front panel, scuffing at the joints. 2.5-inch closed tear along the bottom of the front joint, inconspicuous in the mylar wrapper. $2.50 price intact. Distinct even among New Direction’s lineup of iconic black and white covers, the wordless, enigmatic dust jacket designed by Gertrude Huston has been a cult favorite amongst designers; its scarcity and print anomalies (the spine of the book and the jacket say "The Dark Stranger;" the front flap and the title page say "A...") make it desirable amongst collectors, too.
