First printing, 1924. Brown cloth 8vo, 97pp + 4 pages of plain printed letters at rear. Pictorial endpapers and illustration printed in red and black. Very Good with some mottled fading and soil to the exterior; age toning and a hint of foxing to the bottom of the first few pages, but overall clean. Gift inscription on the half title page, else unmarked. Dedicated to "Little Dick and Jenadean. We don't know just where you are. But here's a story for you." Born in Iowa, Lucille Reiniger “Dixie” Willson (1890-1974) shirked conventional Midwestern life. After a brief marriage in her 20's, she moved to New York and performed with the Ziegfield Follies before joining the Ringling Brothers Circus as an elephant rider. 'ABC' was her second circus-themed book ('The Empty Elephant' was published the previous year) and collaboration with Erick Berry--the pseudonym of Evangel Allena Champlin Best, who authored many of her own children's books and illustrated for her second husband, Howard Best. Early works by both women authors. Scarce.
