The novelty of the idea is reflective of its creator, Parker S. Gates (1907-1986), a renowned inventor who developed a new kind of receiver by age 14. He started the Gates Radio Company with his parents in 1922, first operating out of their home and growing into a major company. Gates is also credited with inventing motion picture equipment, a transcription turntable, and a remote amplifier for live broadcasting.

A long-standing tradition in ham radio, QSL cards are (still) exchanged between amateur radio operators to confirm contact and evaluate the qualities of the transmission signals. They record the call sign, location, date & time, frequency, and signal quality. The standardized QSL card format was proposed by Donald A. Hoffman in the August 1919 issue of QST ("The official organ of the American Radio Relay League”, p. 29). Like exchanging business cards, they served as souvenirs of their contact, occasionally documenting more personal exchanges with jokes in the “Remarks” section, or general expressions of enthusiasm for getting to “QSO” with the recipient.

https://alsobooksbooks.com/products/1927-qsl-card-with-photo-portrait-of-broadcast-radio-pioneer-and-electronics-inventor-parker-s-gates-9dzt
