Stonhouse, James

Admonitions Against Swearing, Sabbath-Breaking and Drunkenness, Designed for the Benefit of Such that are guilty of One or More of these Vices.

Twenty-third edition. London: F.C. and J. Rivington, 1817.

Stitched pamphlet in plain blue wraps, 16mo (6.75 x 4 inches), 12pp. Wraps split along the spine, cover just barely hanging on. Moderate dampstaining affects the wraps and outler leaves, corners nudged. Fair to Good, overall. Contemporary signature to title, else unmarked.

Stonhouse was a baronet and physician who had published a pamphlet against Christianity, then was later converted by Philip Doddridge and James Hervey and eventually took religious orders himself. Originally published in 1769, the pamphlet cites scriptural evidence for his 'Admonitions.' It was republished many times into the nineteenth century by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, but remains scarce in any printing.
