Three photos, each approx. 6.75 x 8.5 inches. Numbered 3, 4 and 5 with captions on the versos and U.S. Dept. of Agriculture "Credit Line" stamp. Captions of photos 3 and 4 are written in pencil on loose yellow slips with paperclip residue on the photos; photo 5 is typed and taped. Photographs otherwise in Very Good to Near Fine condition with excellent clarity and depth. The photographs were taken in 1952 in Lolo National Forest, Montana, by W. E. Steuerwald, official photographer for the US Forest Service in the 1950s and 1960s. Captions read: photo 3, "Smokejumpers, training on pull up rack - this exercise is designed to build arm and stomach muscle;" photo 4, "Smokejumpers on torture rack, this exercise is for strengthing (sic) leg and stomach muscles;" and photo 5, "Training on the 'let down' ropes; this enables a jumper to get to the ground when a tree landing is made; a 100 foot rope is carried in large leg pocket of suit."
