Model book of woodblock print patterns

Japan: Early Shōwa era, ca. 1920s-30s.

Wraps, 7 x 9.75 inches. 14 leaves, each printed with a geometrical grid containing one or two woodblock printed patterns. 3 pages have a single pattern, the others present two patterns, usually variations on a single style element. Minor age toning/soil and a small puncture to one of the plates, some unobtrusive bleed-through of the magenta ink. Very Good. Handmade with a manuscript label, this is presumed to be an album of student work. The plates range from basic geometric arrangements, tessellation patterns, to increasingly complex designs incorporating curved lines and the use of overprinting to create color variations. The album incorporates fundamentals of design and technical skills that would have many industrial arts applications, including textiles and other arts requiring the accurate registration of printing blocks.
