Dorcas. A Magazine of Woman's Handiwork, March 1885

New York: Howard & Bros., 1885.

Wraps. Very good +. Light wear to wraps, otherwise Very Good+ with fresh and crisp contents. Stamp and signature to rear cover, else unmarked. Edited by Laura B. Starr, this issue also features knitting designs by Katherine Armstrong. A women's magazine that offered instructive needlework guides, light articles about decorative arts--in this case, a history of Greek and Roman tapestries, and a report on trends in voluntary domestic arts, like the rise of sofa pillows. This issue reports, "'Out' and 'At Home' cards are the very latest craze among fashionable women, and those who have any decorative talent... They consist of tiny reversible banners to be hung near the hall door, one side bearing in somber design the gloomy word "Out," the other, in gay device," etc. WIth great pictorial and typographic ads for corsets, elixirs, and prophylactic toothbrushes.
