[medicine, herbarium]
Box of 51 nature specimen cards compiled by pharmacy student Howard C. Burns
An unusual pharmacological variation on the student herbarium: 51 cards for nature specimens (mostly intact) collected by Howard C. Burns ("Howdy," 1914-2003). Burns graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 1936 and established Burns Pharmacy in Sheraden, Western Pennsylvania. Each specimen is mounted on a set of 2-3 cards (attached with a brad) containing information about the specimen's properties, means of identification, uses and sometimes dosing information. Specimens are mostly intact, including some comically large twigs and wood chips; others are lost or loose in the repurposed cigar box, attractive in its own right.
