Unusual faux-panorama cabinet card photograph of an upstate New York asylum
An unusually long cabinet card with two photographs lined up to create a panoramic effect, 4.5 x 16.75 inches, ca. 1910. Photographer's studio stamp "Thompson, Monticello NY" and pencil inscription on the verso "Mr Lyons... [Monulk?]." A very large and diverse group of people, including a contingent of children of different races and ethnicities. It appears to be a summer picnic photo of children with benefactors at an orphanage or asylum in upstate New York. They are posed at the edge of a sanded area, likely one of the region's many lakes. The individual expressions of the sitters are quite varied and captivating, a genuinely curious and engrossing image.
