A Gift for Mourners...

New York: American Tract Society, 150 Nassau-Street, (ca. 1840).

Dissuasives from immoderate sorrow; its pleas refuted; and its remedy. (No. 59. To Mourners)

Green printed wraps 12mo, 36pp + wraps paginated (1)-4; "40 pages" printed on rear cover. Printer D. Fanshaw was active at ATS until 1846. Good only with wraps stained and split along spine; contents still bright and clean with an illustrated vignette on the first page.

A version of Flavel's hugely popular Token for Mourners (also available). Flavel's guidance was severe in comparison to modern sympathies. "To regulate and limit our sorrows, is a high Christian attainment," he says (2). Originally published in 1674, it was frequently reprinted through the early 19th century, then selectively sampled and abridged for various publications dealing with mourning. This version was adapted for young people to explicitly address "Consolation under the loss of friends."  Among its recommendations are 7 rules, the final being: "Remember that you will soon, very soon, follow the friend you have lost" (36).
