All paper samples are present, but a 2 x 1.5-inch section has been neatly excised from the lower corner of the Pure Spectrum papers—at the behest of the text, but still unfortunate. In his preamble to the samples, he suggests teachers acquire two sets of his papers, one to \"dissect\" for his color experiments, and one to remain \"unmutilated\" for reference.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis edition contains 64 samples of Bradley Educational Colored Papers, which had been refined and expanded to 175 total available colors since the first edition, which contained 57 samples. Although it's possible the catalog was marketing backstock, 1907 is the first and only dated appearance we could find (including searches through Bradley's \"Kindergarten Review\" and other education periodicals).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMilton Bradley began manufacturing materials for Froebel's gifts after becoming acquainted with Elizabeth Peabody, education advocate and founder of the first English language kindergarten, in the 1860s. Over the decades, Bradley's economic incentive broadened his enterprise to a range of arts and crafts supplies that became increasingly removed from the 20 original Froebel Gifts and Occupations. The contents are unsurprisingly a bit dusty\/powdery, containing all three colors of stencil powder and stamps. The paper envelopes are a bit fragile and two have tears near the flaps. A Very Good set, rare to find such a substantial example.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe NOVLART system was a sophisticated take on stencil kits that aspired to create professional-level graphics with \"no lessons or knowledge of drawing required.\" The stencil outfit was featured at a 1915 London toy fair and reviewed in 'The Stationery World': \"Rarely does half a crown yield as much pleasure in the form of art and recreation as with the Novlart box... after one or two experiments the newest purchaser old or young can produce pictures of real art to adorn his or her walls.\" The system was marketed to crafty adults who wanted to take part in picture-making fun, combining easy-to-use stencils with printed background papers and stationery templates that helped the images look more naturalistic than a typical stencil kit.
