1888 - Spencerian System of Penmanship, Common School Course, Book 1
Oblong 8vo, (2), 24, (2)pp. With two pages of instructions on toned paper at each end of the textblock, including the standard Spencerian hand charts, explanations, and illustrations of posture. Very Good+ with light age toning and soil, still crisp and bright inside. The first book of the revised edition, which notably includes fewer single-letter and movement drills. Slates were widely used for such exercises, eliminating the need to devote substantial space for them. This copy was begun with the erratic markings of Katherine Studer (signed on the cover), who it appears may have returned to slate work after the first line of page 6. A wonderfully contradictory example of the first number in the series--in uncommonly nice condition with uncommonly poor penmanship.
