St. John, N.B. Canada: J & A McMillan for New Brunswick Board of Education, 1886.

Oblong 8vo; 24pp. Very Good+ with light age toning and handling wear. Cover inscribed with owner's information and contents entirely completed. The copy book uses repeating practical examples of short letters, diary entries and a recipe for brown bread. Despite the boys pictured on the cover and lack of explicit statement to such effect, the examples in the book suggest it was intended for young women. In addition to the usual maxims and scholarly quotations, the example letters relate to social interactions and parental duties are signed by women. The example diary specimen also seems to reflect a stereotype of female sensitivity: "My early morning walk in the fresh air and sunshine made me feel much better. How much beauty and pleasure there is in the world after all!"
