A charming gift inscription in verse (to Maggie from Charlie, June 1865) on first blank, else unmarked. A narrative of the afterlife published by a civil servant pre-Civil War. In 1869, the book was reissued as The Gates Wide Open after the massive success of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps' novel of life after death, The Gates Ajar in 1868.
