Cartier's Practical Illustrated Waltz Instructor, Ball Room Guide, and Call Book.

New York: De Witt, 1882.

Giving ample directions for dancing every kind of square and round dances, together with cotillons--including the newest and most popular figures of "the German."

Stated copyright 1882, A. T. B. De Witt. Cloth backed card wraps, 12mo, 104pp + (8)p ads at rear. About Very Good with cloth discolored and fraying around the edges, a small area of in-painted nibbling to rear cover. Mild foxing and occasional pencil annotations; small tear to the upper corner of the ffep. Advertisements at rear offer popular variety act amusements, including racist minstrelsy alongside fortune telling, ventriloquism, and amateur magic. A scarce item with some particularly charming leg illustrations; preceded by an 84-page Cartier and Baron's Practical Illustrated Waltz Instructor (1879), additional contents in this version include a section on "Etiquette of the Ball Room."

Noting an ample supply of books on dancing, "full of learned disquisitions, but barren of any real help to those who are beginning," the book is particularly intended for people aspiring to a certain social status. "Fifty years ago, there was to be found a large class who affected to look upon dancing as an undignified, dandified accomplishment; but to-day everybody who pretends to the slightest acquaintance with good society recognizes the necessity of learning to dance" (3).
