The Kindergarten or Home and School Culture
...a choice collection of poems, stories, drawings and songs together with XX chapters on the kindergarten and its relation to the home and school.
Publisher's pictorial cloth quarto, 399pp + (1) adverts. Color frontispiece and copious b&w illustrations throughout the text. Very Good with rubbing to extremities and general handling wear including fingersoil and a few close edge tears, slim tidemark at the lower corner of the textblock. Gift inscription to the first blank, pages otherwise age toned but unmarked.
Contains some coverage of Froebel's Gifts, excerpted from 'The Paradise of Childhood' by Edward Wiebe, but largely a general collection of light verse, songs, and diversions with an aspect toward moral instruction. A good example of the "Americanization" of Kindergarten--the publishers of this volume acknowledge their debt in borrowing selected images and texts from Milton Bradley publications, which included the 'Paradise' book that was faithful to Froebel's designs, but had evolved to publishing and marketing "kindergarten" books and materials that bore tangential relation to Froebel's original model. 11 in OCLC.
