The 3-day event was organized by the Afro-American Institute of Pittsburgh and open only to the Black community. It concluded with an appearance by Amiri Baraka/LeRoi Jones and was among many Malcolm X Memorial programs organized across the country. Community groups urged the day to be treated as a work and school holiday, which gained more traction in Philadelphia, planting the seed for a national Civil Rights holiday.
