New York: William R. Jenkins, [ca. 1900].

Deep red leather 24mo, 5 x 3.75 inches, 175pp. No date, estimated 1899-1901 in OCLC, which locates 5 copies. Good condition: Spine dried and darkened, chipped at the crown and with several horizontal splits down the length; some residue to interior, nibbling to the front flyleaf and small stain on the title page. Covers slightly bowed but brightly stamped in gilt. A most entertaining book of cable codes relating to business and travel, issued by New York bankers "Blair & Co." The codes would be used in telegrams, which were priced by the letter. The code words allowed for sentiments to be conveyed economically and with some amusing runs of phrases (If you can wait, If you cannot wait, If you will wait, If you wish us to wait, It will be best to wait, It will be best to wait a while as there are signs of improvement, Is there any use in waiting? Shall they wait? Shall we wait? Should wait.) Includes chart of travel codes across languages. Scarce, and quite engaging!
