The Sea and Its Living Wonders

First edition. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1861.

Translated from the Fourth German Edition and partly rewritten by the author. First American Edition. Hardcover cloth 8vo, 427pp. Well-illustrated, including hand-colored folding map of the ocean currents, 12 color “chromoxylographic” plates by Henry Noel Humphreys, and many in-text woodcut drawings and diagrams. A Very Good+ copy with a little nudging and light wear to the extremities, but the binding is strong and the contents are bright. A beautiful copy from the collection of botanist, protozoologist, and diatom specialist Arthur M. Edwards, with his signature on the front flyleaf. Scarce edition with nice provenance.
