The Picnic That Was Not A Picnic
(20) manuscript pages in a very charming wrapper, illustrated by Olive Gaskell and dedicated to their friend, Grace Lushbaugh. With original photo of the author, Winifred Weld, tipped in. The location isn't identified, but the booklet was likely originally made in St. Joseph, Indiana--where Grace and Winifred are both recorded around that time. It most recently comes from Oklahoma City, where Grace died in 1953.
"It was not a rare, perfect day but a perfectly rare day, a day that spends all of its time promising all kinds of weather and finally closes without having settled on any." The story is about a group of girls who plan a picnic in Brighton Park, get on the wrong trolley, realize their mistake, exit the trolley, get caught in a rainstorm, take cover on the porch of a house they think is abandoned only to get scared off by a "little, old yet dignified and fashionable woman." They ultimately take shelter in a tool shed, but get locked in. They have their picnic while hoping someone will come to let them out, but end up sawing through the lock to escape! A pretty great story, and really lovely item in Very Good condition with very minor discoloration.
