My Own Kenmore Sewing Scrap Book

Sears Roebuck and Co., ca. 1960.

Accidental masterpiece of materiality, color & composition--part American kitsch, mostly modern art. Sewing "scrapbook" published by Kenmore introduces users to the various functions of their home sewing machines. Sears Roebuck and Co., ca. 1960. 4 lessons of 4 leaves each, plus 4 blank leaves at rear, (20 total). 2 punched holes with cord binding. 8.5 x 11 inches. By "Maude," no date, ca. 1960 with clipping about tailoring shorts from the September 11, 1960 Minneapolis Daily Tribune laid-in.

Like a traditional sewing notebook, this "scrapbook" includes notes on what stitches to use when, but has the added aspects of machine attachments and settings. A pocket with zipper closure, smocking, cording, tucks, buttonholes, a plethora edge stitching and ruffles, tacked to the pages with pins, covered with threads and skipped stitches from wayward bobbins and unfinished hems. A wondrous, incidental work of art with bright, geometric and abstract forms that fill us with joy.
