Birds' Nests

First edition. London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, [1854].

First edition. Cloth. Very Good. A scarce juvenile tale imbued with ornithological knowledge, predating many other popular illustrated Victorian books on nests and eggs, including Johns' slightly later Birds' Nests and Eggs. With a profusion of 22 delicate chromolithograph plates (complete), as well as in-text engravings. No stated author or date, but attributed in OCLC to Charles Alexander Johns, 1854, with illustrations by Josiah Wood Whymper and William Dickes.

Gilt embossed cloth 16mo, 248pp + 4p catalog of "books suitable for presents." A Very Good copy with occasional foxing and fingersoil; rubbing wear to spine ends. Plate 13 was inserted a skosh askew and is tanned at the protruding edges. Inscription to first blank, else unmarked. A handsome copy with an abundance of charming plates.
