Album of 50+ Froebel Gifts - paper weaving, decorative stitching, embroidery patterns

A substantive collection of over 50 examples of Froebel gifts #12 and #14, showing a progression of skill from simple patterns and tesselations to representational forms and complex designs reminiscent of European needlework. Ontario, Canada, ca. 1910. Very Good. Cloth album with faded gilt namestamp on the cover. 9.5 x 9 inches, 30 leaves, ca. 1910. Presumed to be Margaret E. Punchard O'Brien (1903-1994), buried in Ontario, where the album was found. With 19 woven paper patterns (4.75" square), 15 embroidered designs (7" square), and 17 strips of sewn pricked patterns. Very Good with occasional closed tears at the edges of the pages from hasty handling; cloth a bit dry and fragile at the joints, light expected wear to exterior.

The championing of object and form over word and language became a philosophy of modernism to which a formidable roster of names (Frank Lloyd Wright, Piet Mondrian, LeCorbusier, Josef Albers) and movements (Bauhaus, minimalism) ascribed. The influence of Froebel and Pestalozzi in the "kindergarten generation" of modern artists is recognized to the extent that an exhibition of Froebel materials was held at MoMA in 2012, and examples such as these paper weavings and stitched designs are held in their permanent collection.
