Tissage! 1916 Manuel Pratique [album of paper weaving]
France: 1916. Green concertina folded paper album, 9 x 7 inches. 51 pattern examples mounted on 32 panels + cover, which has a woven appearance but is actually cut paper in a meticulously glued pattern (don't miss the exclamation point!) Examples are Near Fine with occasional bumping to the edges of the fringe and age toning around the edges. The folds of the album are delicate--a few are beginning to split at the ends, mostly the top panel, and one is neatly reinforced from the backside with archival mending tape. A little bumped around the corners, but Very Good or better overall. From the Rhône-Alpes region of France, dated 1916. The examples are numbered individually and organized into 4 series reflecting color palette and scale. The first two examples incorporate wooden sticks into the weft and the work progresses to increasingly intricate patterns, culminating with a pictorial weaving of a butterfly done in 1/8" slats. Rather exquisite and sophisticated work.
