O'Grady's Goat: A Merry Game (4060)

Springfield, MA: Milton Bradley Co., 1906.

"A narrative game, and a good one, relating the curious adventures of O'Grady's Goat. It will provoke laughter among the soberest company of people." (1907 catalog)

A non-competitive amusement where players select cards to fill in the blanks of the story printed in the booklet, as in "Peter Coddle's Trip to New York.” Blanks generally represent things the unruly goat eats while rampaging through home and schoolhouse before he ultimately "kicks the bucket”.

The cards name common objects, creating a surprisingly vivid sense of what you might see looking around the house, or even the room, the game was played in: Bottle of Corn Cure, Flannel Petticoat, Pair of Celluloid Cuffs, A Circus Poster, Piece of Fly Paper, Crazy-Quilt.

Patterned paper-covered box, 7.25 x 5.25 x 1", with color lithograph mounted to the lid. Complete with 40 cards and 12pp booklet, "The Jolly Game of O'Grady's Goat.” Very Good with moderate fingersoil to cards, numbered in pencil on the versos. Typical rubbing to box edges and small chip to the right edge of the lithograph label, otherwise still bold. Gift inscription to bottom. Booklet still crisp and clean, a played but well-preserved example.
