Writing Lessons for Primary Grades

New York: A. N. Palmer Company, 1937.

Softcover oblong 12mo (4x6 inches), 72pp. Very Good+. New York Board of Education bookplate to the inside cover, student writing on the cover but contents are remarkably bright and clean. A relatively late printing of Palmer’s primer featuring slightly modernized graphics. The Palmer method surpassed the more ornate Spencerian method in the early 20th century. Championed for simplicity that allowed writing at speed, the Palmer Business Method was particularly popular to rival the efficiency of typewriters. The Palmer method was ultimately replaced by the Zaner-Bloser method, which provided for “print” writing to be taught before cursive, theoretically enabling the child to develop communication skills at an earlier age.
