The Beacon Primer, also published by Ginn & Co. 1912. First Edition. Green cloth 8vo, 120pp. With illustrations by G. A. Harker printed in two colors. Very Good+ with intermittent child's writing/marks in pencil. The Phonetic Chart corresponds to lessons in Part I of the Primer. It was the first educational work published by Fassett (1869-1930), who had previously written on the history of New Hampshire. A Dartmouth graduate, he was appointed State Superintendent of Schools in 1893 and had specific ideas for how reading and writing should be taught, including that the alphabet should be taught after phonetics, that "concert work is useless," annd that "the teacher will be surprised and disappointed at the student's lack of power in sounding." A revised series of Beacon charts and readers were issued in the early 1920s along with supplemental letter cards and charts printed at a reduced scale. Few copies of this rather imposing chart survive--OCLC locates 3 copies (Stanford, Penn, British Library).
