The Proud Girl Humbled, or, The Two School-Mates: For little boys and little girls

Philadelphia: Lindsay and Blakiston, 1849.

Navy cloth 16mo, 58pp. Sparingly illustrated with a handsome hand-colored frontispiece. Very Good+ with rubbing to cloth, especially at the spine, gentle foxing throughout. Pleasingly set in large Bodoni type printed by C. Sherman and stereotyped by J. Fagan. Series "Aunt Mary's Library" indicated on spine only.

Set in Philadelphia with some local references to the reservoir in Fairmount Park and Chestnut Street high society. Matilda, a girl from "old money," takes exception to associating with Rosalba, the daughter of a successful and respected storekeeper whose wealth has enabled her to enjoy the same social circles. What Rosalba lacks in refinement, she makes up for with graciousness, charming everyone around her--even, ultimately, Matilda.
