A scarce early example of The Kindergarten, founded in Chicago by Alice and Cora Stockham in 1888 and ran until 1906, when it transitioned the Kindergarten and Primary Magazine. Contains instructive articles, reminiscences of Froebel, and general writings on the function and status of early education. Frontis illustration of “Ponto” and in-text illustrations peppered throughout. In Fair condition, with a 2x1” loss at the bottom corner, taped from the verso, small chips along the edges of the wraps. The first 10 or so leaves have creasing and soil from being folded/bumped along the foredge. The remaining contents are bright and clean. 7 pages of ads at the rear. Clothing and domestic goods are advertised alongside over a dozen kindergarten training schools across the United States, Prang and Milton Bradley supplies, and various books and resources for mothers, including Stockham’s Tokology. With contributions from among the most influential contributors to the Kindergarten movement, including Emma A. Beebe, Emilie Poulsson, A. H. Heinemann, Susan Payne Clement, Annie Moore, Anne E. Allen, Nellie C. Alexander, Constance Mackenzie, L. Clarkson, Patty and Mary Hill, Edward Howe, Lizzie Willis, Baroness von Marenholtz-Bulow, Grace Call Kempton (on Delsarte), Anna E. Bryan, Mari Ruef Hofer.
