The Teacher's Improved Class Book, 120-page edition

Boston: Ginn and Company, 1874.

Copyright 1874 by H. F. Fisk. Gilt-stamped cloth 12mo, 7.75 x 4.75 inches. The 120 page edition, plus 4p ads at rear. A Good copy with discoloration to the covers, abrasion at the foredge of the boards with cloth frayed through in spots. Contents still crisp and binding firm. An uncommon 19C teacher's accessory in an excellent shade of blue, enticingly graphic and tactile with manicule-accented grids and perforated paper.

Herbert F. Fisk (1840-1916) was a classics professor at various East Coast prep schools before being appointed Principal of Northwestern University's Preparatory School in 1873. This, his 'Class Book,' provides a standardized format for teachers to record pupils' attendance and performance, including directions for assessing recitations and calculating averages. The book is organized into 15-week sections, each with 6 pages/3 leaves, 2 of the leaves with a perforated column. This copy is partially completed with students listed in alphabetical sections--maybe 25 or 30 students represented in the book, but it doesn't appear this particular teacher took to Fisk's system. Several of the perforated columns have been detached but the data columns are overwhelmingly unmarked. No information about the teacher or school is indicated in the book.
