Picture Sewing: Embroidery for Little Hands (#4221)

Springfield, MA: Milton Bradley Co., ca. 1900.

A slightly earlier iteration of the sewing cards, this set was furnished with an awl, a felt mat, and a variety of colored threads. The child is called to perforate the images themselves before sewing. This box contains 5 bobbins of colored thread, 20 cards (19 complete, the last one partially complete with the needle still attached), as well as the pricking needle and pad. Directions under the lid do not specify the number of cards or bobbins—but note the other series of cards available in sets of 14 and note, “The cards from this box are selected from the above collection, so that in ordering an envelope it is probable that about one-third will be duplicates of those found in this box.”  8 of the cards have small “MBCo” logos in the lower corners;  the other 12 do not. One panel of the lid is split at the corners, otherwise a little rubbed and toned; cards with light fingersoil. Very Good and uncommonly original.
