Sixty-nine color lithographs, approx. 2.25 x 7 inches, printed recto-only. Roughly detached at the left edges; 3 with losses to the initials and a puncture to one of the Y’s. Tanning and edgewear, but generally clean.

Unmarked color lithograph ABC illustrations, discovered to be from The Merry and Wise ABC…, published in London by Ernest Nister in 1896. A brilliantly designed alphabet book with each page divided into four sections, the original had 104 alphabet strips. Regrettably removed from their original context, the 69 present slips could serve as "cards" for a spelling game (akin to the "Sectional" spelling puzzles), or used for a writing exercise, or simply kept for posterity or display. Charming and inventive illustrations, including a bespectacled dog checking the pulse of a sick dog (“Illness”), a girl studying by a globe (“Lessons”), a boy with a drum smashed over his head  (“Quarrel”), and a very pleasing Orange.
