Whitney's Twelve Points on the Horse Scientifically Explained...
...Anatomically, Physiologically and Mechanically; Or how to judge him, from his form and appearance. His history varieties and treatment.
Green pictorial wraps, 16mo; 38, (2)pp. Fair with chipping around the edges of the wraps, cover attached by lower thread only--still an attractive graphic item, printed on the minty shade of green wraps suggestive of arsenical pigment; cautious handling advised. A nice stylized engraving over the famous racing mare "Goldsmith Maid" on the rear cover. The booklet was sold by mail for fifty cents and helped market "Whitney's unrivaled black diamond condition powder... Warranted free from any drug that can possibly injure a well horse." More targeted toward judging a racehorse than assessing the health of a working animal. From the introduction: "There are perhaps few persons who do not profess to be somewhat competent judges of the form, quality, and worth of a horse. But rarely are their judgments founded on real principle..." 1 copy in OCLC (AAS).
