The Saloon-Keeper's Ledger: A series of temperance revival discourses

First Edition. New York: Funk & Wagnalls Company, 1895.

Introduction by Rev. Theodore L. Cuyler. Decorative cloth 12mo, 129pp. Very Good with faint band of soil to the lower cover, minor rubbing to extremities. Tidemark to front endpapers only. A very handsome binding that makes the book seem less sober than it is. A "book of results" and "ledger of public knowledge" about the effects of intemperance, building the case that "the saloon as an institution is the source of a large part of the disease in the community" (11-12). Of note, he argues the medical case regarding alcohol's deleterious effects. Chapters are titled after Banks' series of lectures at the Hanson Place Methodist Episcopal Church, Brooklyn, each beginning "The Saloon Debtor to..." Disease, Private and Social Immorality, Ruined Homes, Pauperized Labor, Lawlessness and Crime, and Political Corruption.
